Does tallow skincare smell like beef?

Our Clarifying Tallow Cream has a fresh, light citrus scent and does not have the beefy smell many first-time tallow shoppers expect. Fragrance-free products may have a mild natural scent from their ingredients.

What’s the difference between Clarifying Tallow Cream and Skin Barrier Tallow Cream?

Clarifying Tallow Cream is our everyday moisturizer for breakout-prone skin. It has a fresh citrus scent, a smooth lightweight feel, and is the cream I personally use in my daily routine.

Skin Barrier Tallow Cream is richer, simpler and fragrance-free. It’s the better choice when your main concern is very dry or sensitive-feeling skin.

Is Clarifying Tallow Cream only for my face?

No. Clarifying was created with facial skincare in mind, but it can also be used on dry areas of the body such as hands, elbows and feet.

How much tallow cream should I use?

Start small. About a pea-sized amount is usually enough for the face.

Using more doesn’t necessarily mean better results—a little goes a long way.

Is tallow cream greasy?

When used in a small amount, Clarifying melts easily into the skin and is designed to leave skin feeling soft and moisturized without a heavy, greasy feel.

If you apply too much, it will naturally feel richer, so start with less and add more only if needed.

How long does one jar last?

For facial use, a jar can last for months because only a small amount is needed at a time. How long yours lasts will depend on how often you use it and whether you also use it on your body.

Which cleansing bar should I choose?

Golden Glow — Daily cleansing for breakout-prone skin.

Midnight Reset — A deeper-cleansing option for congested-feeling skin and body breakouts. It can also be used occasionally on the face.

Calendula Barrier Restore — A fragrance-free, ultra-gentle option for delicate and sensitive-feeling skin.

Honey Rescue — An everyday shower and hand bar for dry-feeling skin with a mild orange-and-honey character.

Pure Beginnings — Our most minimal, fragrance-free bar for babies, toddlers and anyone wanting an especially simple cleanser.

Why are your cleansing bars cured for 8 weeks?

Our bars cure for approximately eight weeks before they are ready to sell. This gives excess water time to evaporate and allows the bar to become harder and longer-lasting before it reaches your shower.

How do I make my soap last longer?

Let your bar dry completely between uses.

Use a draining soap dish, keep it out of standing water and avoid leaving it directly under the shower stream when you aren’t using it.

A dry bar lasts much longer than one that stays wet.

Are all Northern Roots products fragrance-free?

No.

Some products are intentionally fragrance-free, while others are lightly scented using essential oils.

If you prefer fragrance-free products, check the individual product page and ingredient list before purchasing.

Do you use synthetic fragrance?

We do not currently use synthetic fragrance in our skin and cleansing products. Scented formulas use essential oils, while several products are completely fragrance-free.

Can everyone expect the same results?

No. Skin is individual, and the same product can feel different from one person to another.

We tell you what each product was designed for, how to use it and what’s inside it so you can make an informed choice, but we don’t believe in promising that one product will give everyone the same result.

Should I patch test a new product?

Yes, especially if your skin is reactive or you’re trying a new ingredient for the first time.

Apply a small amount to a limited area first and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Where are Northern Roots products made?

Northern Roots products are handcrafted in small batches in British Columbia, Canada.

We keep production hands-on so we can stay closely involved in how our products are formulated, made and improved.

What ingredients are in your products?

Ingredient transparency is important to us—we want you to understand what’s in your routine without having to guess.

Are Northern Roots products only for people with problem skin?

Not at all.

Northern Roots is building everyday skin and body care made to perform. Some products are designed with specific skin needs in mind, while others are simple everyday products for cleansing, moisturizing and caring for your skin.
